Holt (1864-1922) began his lifelong work on fishes in the late 1880s while he was Professor of Zoology at St. Andrews. In 1890 he was appointed Assistant Naturalist on the Royal Dublin Society's survey of fishing grounds off the west coast of Ireland and published valuable papers both on the reproductive stages of the species found there and on the rarer and deep water fishes. Further ichtyological work in Grimsby, Marseille and Plymouth followed before he returned to Ireland in 1898 to lead the Royal Dublin Society's newly founded marine laboratory. As the structure of Irish fisheries research changed over the years, Holt continued to play a leading role and in 1914 became Chief Inspector of Fisheries. "He did important organizing in bringing Irish investigations into line with those in other countries, and in giving Ireland an international standing in marine research. Under him the dry official reports of the Department became enlarged into a series of valuable zoological memoirs." [Praeger - Some Irish Naturalists].
