A history of the Caldwell family, their estates in western Fermanagh from the plantation of Ulster in 1610 to 1870, and their connections to wider Irish affairs during that period. It covers also the family's involvement in affairs outside of Ireland, for example in the West Indies, in the American War of Independence and in the service of the Austrian Empress, Maria Theresa. The author was headmaster of a school in Beleek, County Fermanagh, where one of the Caldwells was instrumental in the foundation of the famous pottery.
