Probably the first edition in English, but there were two rival Dublin translations as well; whether one of them was the source of this text or vice versa is unclear. This was Prévost's third novel, which went through several editions in England and Ireland. It is set in the aftermath of the Battle of the Boyne, with the Dean narrating the exploits of his half-brothers, especially the wild Patrice, and their equally passionate sister, Rose. Prévost's description of the Dean himself is not very prepossessing, but Fanny Burney wrote in her early diary that she fell in love with him : "The piety, the zeal, the humanity, goodness and humility of this charming old man have won my heart." - Loeber, Guide to Irish Fiction.
