Sir Alfred Irwin was born in 1853 in Co. Roscommon, the son of Henry Irwin, Archdeacon of Elphin. He was educated at Kingstown School and entered the Indian Civil Service in the Punjab in 1876. He was transferred to Burma in 1877 and became Deputy Commissioner in 1886. He then became Commissioner in 1898 before becoming Acting Judge in the Lower Burma Chief Court in 1902. He became member of the Legislative Council in Burma and Acting Judicial Commissioner, Upper Burma in 1903. He rose to be Acting Chief Judge of Burma by 1908 before retiring in 1909 to Ailesbury Road, Dublin. He married Alice Kathleen French, daughter of Christoper French and Susan Percy. He had a son Alfred and two daughters Kathleen and Dorothy.
