| Summary: | Ó Ceallaigh, in his letter, refers to Arthur Griffith having outlined 'many useful suggestions for work to be done immediately by the Dail and the Sinn Fein Standing Committee'. The recipient of the letter, dated 31 January 1919, is unclear. With an attached copy of Griffith's letter, dated 23 January 1919, in which he recommends keeping the country 'calm, disciplined and dignified', requests the government focus on the upcoming Paris Peace Conference and advises the Dáil not to 'commit itself to any scheme which it does not feel can be worked out with present resources'. Also attached is a document in which Griffith outlines recommendations for securing control of local bodies, including county and urban councils, Port and Docks Boards, a revision of the civil service, a review of the Sinn Fein Poor Law scheme, slum clearance and how best to secure the co-operation of the banks. He goes on to make suggestions regarding the forthcoming Peace Conference, notably his thoughts on lobbying President Woodrow Wilson ('Mobilise the poets. Let them address Wilson')and any nation who might be sympathetic to Irish independence. |
