| Summary: | John Blachford's letters to his mother, written from Waltrim, Co. Wicklow, home of the Rev. Michael Sandys and his wife Barbara (née Tighe) touch on religious matters and makes reference to his 'absurd melancholy' of the preceeding winter (1793) and business matters (1794). In an undated letter he writes of his emotional and spiritual condition - 'I find my heart so cold, so satisfied with every outward gratification, so unable to offer either prayer or praise'. Incomplete letter from Theodosia Blachford to her daughter the poet Mary Tighe, dated 1796. Reference is made to Tighe's spiritual well-being and her marriage - Blachford refers to her daughter's 'companion' [Henry Tighe] and the 'many instances of his indulgence deference and affection to you'. Possibly a draft letter; with corrections throughout. |
