Having scaled the intellectual heights of Rūmī and George Herbert, Morning Mary felt the need to come back down to earth, and the wonderful Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection is perfect to lift the mood! A rocky ford in a sylvan setting with mountains for a backdrop, has the makings of a wonderful landscape by a skilled artist. As ever, there is no stated location for the STPs, but I am sure those distinctive mountains will be a big help in the identification?

I am thinking not a million miles from Killarney.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/30369211@N00/] The shape of the mountain isn’t really ringing a bell for me. I suppose it MIGHT be Torc mountain. If it is near Killarney, I’d suggest the most likely location is on the Old Kenmare Road which is now part of the National Park.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland] I have nothing to contribute regarding the location so I'll just say it's a buena foto antigua. Or perhaps dos buenas fotos antiguas.

Wow. Half the day gone and still not found? I must take an interest.

You can see the edge of a very big pointy mountain in the background. There aren't too many of those in the country. A couple in Wicklow, one in the Mournes, maybe Cork or Donegal. The vegetation looks like Wicklow to me.

I think there's actually a lot of detail in the hills. I'll do a histogram equalisation. Edit: It's just one hill with a pointy mountain behind. The slight colour variations are folds and ridges, but nothing very distinct.

We seem to be looking south, and it shelves quite steeply to the left, as if the sea or a major river is there somewhere.

It could be looking west towards Croagh Patrick (largely hidden behind the lower hills in the middle distance) - taken from east somewhere around Brackloon National School. This streetview gives you an idea of what I'm thinking of - if the streetview camera was 500m+ to the right then Croagh Patrick might be almost hidden by the bumpy hills, but I can't find a ford near Brackloon School that fits... www.google.ie/maps/@53.7514246,-9.592522,3a,75y,303.25h,8...

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/139877639@N08] yes, it looks pointy enough. the sun is quite high and we're looking more or less straight at it. I'm surprised it's looking west.

Of course the OSI's policy of not mapping interesting mountains at 25" scale isn't helping.

Might be a better fit from the other side: goo.gl/maps/GpN3XmTh6DzMZwqa8 There's a ford somewhere round here on the 6"

Or there's always my favourite theory when the image won't fit - it's been flipped: goo.gl/maps/2WEBMkcn3k8ePc5d9

Here's the nearest river, but if it's this, it's a bit further east: goo.gl/maps/a4GYGtyfep4VDTko8

There's stepping stones at Cartoor on the 6" - not hugely convincing, but not entirely implausible either. OSI still won't export for me. Edit: I've found them on streetview. Not there.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/8468254@N02] There’s a second OSI version that allows me at least to share, so I presume you mean here.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] That's a handier version, alright. There's more further west and a couple of fords - e.g. arcg.is/ePjH1

Looking at the catalogue, there are three photos of Croagh Patrick taken from Brackloon (one, two, three) and one from "Cappagh".

Not the usual Cappagh - it's north of Castlebar. I wonder if they mean Knappagh? Which would be where Rory put it in the first place.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/8468254@N02] There are also a couple titled "Knappa" with at least one having a similar view(one, two). However, my grand tour of the boreens of Knappagh/Brackloon didn't leave me any wiser.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] The "Cappagh" one is taken from more or less this direction, but higher up, and I reckon further away. goo.gl/maps/VrnPozbX8XhKV1dN6 Edit: Possibly here, but it's hard to tell with a cloud on it: goo.gl/maps/7zUpSfAnamMwg1si8

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/8468254@N02] The weather was a lot nicer in 2009. I presume that this is the double bridge in Brackloon no. 3 Streetview / OS Map.

O Mac
I have to agree with [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] and say that the evidence points to this photo having been taken in Co Kerry and, as Niall said, not too far from Killarney . The preceding photo 0676 is of Kate Kearneys and the following ones are also of Kerry. 0678 show the same pointy mountain. Kate Kearney's cottage is 8.5kms away. There is also a wee stream (River Gaddagh) below the road and the satellite view shows a ford.. goo.gl/maps/Ej5LBS2e5CLCyKKN6 0676 catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000563995 0677 The above. 0678 catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000563997
