Imperial election, 1955 : constituency of Fermanagh and South Tyrone : notice of poll.

Bibliographic Details
Summary:Poster dated 16 May, 1955 for election to be held on Thursday, 26 May, 1955. Candidates were Philip Christopher Clarke and Lieutenant Colonel Robert George Grosvenor. Signed by Henry A. Burke, Returning Officer. In the 1955 UK General Election, Clarke was elected MP for the Fermanagh and South Tyrone constituency, winning 30,529 votes, and becoming the youngest MP at the time. As Clarke was in prison at the time of his election [serving ten years for a treason felony - a member of the IRA, he was arrested after the IRA raided a British Army barracks in Omagh, County Tyrone], Grosvenor lodged a petition to have him unseated. The case appeared before the Northern Ireland High Court in August 1955; on 2 September, 1955 the court ruled that Clarke was ineligible for election and his Unionist opponent was declared duly elected.
