To end the week and to stay beside the sea as we have for the past few days we go to the Mason Collection. This doesn't look like anyplace in Ireland that I know? Was Mr. Mason out forring?
And indeed derangedlemur quickly confirmed that Mason was not on these shores, but living it up in Douglas on the Isle of Man. The general consensus is that we can perhaps refine the two decades of our catalogue range to perhaps the decade between 1890ish and 1900ish...
Collection: Mason Photographic Collection
Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. Perhaps c.1892-1902

Looks a bit like Bangor, only bigger and fancier.

Horse tramway history - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Bay_Horse_Tramway - I think we are before 1902 ...
"... In 1882, Lightfoot sold the line to Isle of Man Tramways Ltd, later the Isle of Man Tramways & Electric Power Co. Ltd, which also owned the Manx Electric Railway. The company went into liquidation in 1900 as a consequence of a banking collapse. The tramway was sold by the liquidator to Douglas Corporation in 1902. Since 1927 the tramway has run in summer only...."

I see straw hats on the ladies, but not on the gentlemen. Pics from 1905 on would have been full of boaters, suggesting an earlier date.

The clock is from 1887: originally the four clock faces were lit by small gas jets.
