| Summary: | Leaflet authored by Rev. Michael O'Flanagan attacking those who refuse to give the sacrament [Holy Communion] to "...the young heroes of Ireland fighting for Irish independence". He accuses the archbishop of Baltimore of being "...the most effective enemy of Irish Republic in the United States of the past five years". also references Dr. Glynn of New York and how his support of Michael Davitt in the late 19th century saw his suspension and excommunication for five years. Single copies of the leaflet can be purchased for 25c each; other bulk order prices detailed at end of leaflet - "Address all orders to Mrs. Margaret Kelly, 495 12 Street, Brooklyn, New York". Includes image of Rev. Michael O'Flanagan - in 1904 he was invited to speak on a tour of the US by [his] Bishop John Joseph Clancy and Horace Plunkett ostensibly to encourage investment for agricultural and industrial projects in the west of Ireland; in August 1910 he was elected to the executive of the Gaelic League; in 1915 he spoke against war-related taxes at the funeral of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa. At the 1917 Sinn Féin convention he became vice-President (along with Arthur Griffith); he was President of Sinn Féin from 1933 to 1935 though was expelled from the party for taking a state job on the Placenames Commission and also for taking part in a programme broadcast by Radio Éireann. He was appointed the chaplin to the First Dáil in January 1919 and during the period 1927 to 1928 he edited for publication several volumes of the 1830's Ordnance Survey of Ireland notebooks. |
