| Summary: | '1843' written in manuscript hand at top of card. Illustration depicts a map of Ireland, to the side of which there are two flags - in the one on the right, the words 'Catholic, Protestant, Dissenter, Quis separabit? [Latin, 'Who shall separate us?']' is written within a shamrock. At the sides of the card are statements comparing Ireland with other European countries, while at each the corner of the card a battle or siege is referred to - Clontarf, 23rd April 1014; Benburb, 5th June 1645; Limerick, 9th to 31st August, 1690 and Béal An Átha Buidhe [Béal an Átha Buidhe, 'The Battle of the Yellow Ford', fought in southern Armagh] 10th August, 1598. At top is a quotation from the Dungannon Volunteers, 15 Befurary 1782 whith a quotation from William Saurin (1757-1839) at foot of recto of card: 'You may make the Union a law but you cannot make it binding on conscience.' |
