Notes:The MSS. consist of charters, deeds, wills, reports of synodal transactions, and narratives concerning property during the reigns of the Anglo-Saxon, Danish and early Norman Kings, A.D. 681 to A.D. 1161. "They supply information which cannot be obtained from any other source, on the public and home life of our forefathers, and help us to trace the progress of their language for nearly three hundred years." The documents (125 in number) include the foundation charter of Westminster Abbey by Edward the Confessor, King Alfred's Will, the Testament of the Ealdorman Alfred, etc., etc. A transcript and translation are appended to each.
