Summary: | Richard R. M. Brooke's letters to the Charles Robert and Gerard 'Charlie' Hamilton relate to the Boer War, his involvement in the fighting (he was a Lieutenant in the 43rd Light Infantry), the taking of Boer prisoners, his thoughts on the prospects for the peace negotiations and the South African delegation attending the peace talks, his impressions of Johannesburg, and, in passing, to his shooting of wildlife while on British Army 'drives' across the country. George Brooke's (Lieutenant, Irish Guards) letter to Hamilton is written from a convalescent camp at Rondesbosch, South Africa and concerns his hopes of securing leave and news of hunting in Ireland. Also included are copy letters from George and Richard Brooke (possibly transcribed by Charles Hamilton) to their grandmother [Louisa Hamilton], written from Kroonstad and dated May 1900, concerning their participation in recent British Army campaigns in South Africa. Also attached is flyer for a concert, held in the Antient Concert Rooms, Dublin, in aid of the Imperial Yeomanry, Irish Contingent. |
