| Summary: | Containing Irish language notes, translations, proverbs, figures of speech etc., also an interesting passage in English on pages 3 & 4, apparently a draft about the early days of the Gaelic League in Cork: "I was the agent in Cork city and county for Gaelic Journal .. It depended on poor John Fleming's health - a very old man at the time. The sale at start only 6 copies. The sale went up to 36 when Fr. O'Growney took over the editing. Dan McCabe in Banteer also a voice crying in the wilderness in early days. I went out to Banteer to establish branch of Gaelic League on his invitation .. I went on visit to Gugán [Barra] with John McNeill & Torna also to establish Gaelic League .." A translation of the same passage into Irish follows a few pages later; also a passage reading "Mar bhuanchuimhne uaimse ar an aimsir do chaitheamar i bhfochair a chéile i bpríosún Reading .."(apparently a draft of a presentation inscription to a former colleague in Reading Jail). Reading from the other end, there are more Irish language notes, followed by some pages of draft poetry in English (difficult to decipher), including a passage headed 'Máire plays (one year old)'. MacSwiney's father had been a native speaker of Irish. Terence MacSwiney was active in the Gaelic League from its early days, and learned to speak Irish well. He often visited the Ballingeary Gaeltacht, and the beginning of this notebook may date from the summer of 1915, when he attended an Irish course there. |
