Description: Contains legal papers relating to marriage settlements of the Smyth and allied families. Includes an acknowledgement of Thomas Ponsonby that he received full satisfaction of the interest due to him from his wife's portion of her inheritance from her father [Richard Grice] from his brother-in-law Richard Smyth. Also includes papers relating to the marriage of Isabella Smyth and Col. William Crosby,c .1699 and a later legal dispute about the settlement in 1763. Contains a deed and related materials concerning the marriage of Penelope Smyth , daughter of Richard Smyth [1706-1768] to Colthurst Weekes. Penlope married Weekes when she was under age and without the consent of her family, the deed empowers Richard Smyth, her brother to pay her inheritance, it is signed by Grice, John and Richard Smyth, 19 January 1790. Includes instructions for William Sankey relating to the marriage settlement of Grice Smyth [c. 1762-1816] and Mary Mitchell, 1795. Also contains a letter from John Cooke possibly to William Armstrong about his intention to marry 'Miss Taylor' whose father resided in Antigua, 27 February 1783.
