Notes: | This item is held in the Ephemera Department. Includes portrait of Admiral Sir David Beatty commandant of the Grand Fleet and John Jellicoe. Beside each portrait written "Russell, Southsea". Includes two portraits and seventeen photographs with Spanish text underneath explaining the action. Title translates to 'British Navy at War'. Handwritten at top and foot right side number 173. Blue lettering and black and white photographs printed on beige paper. The Grand Fleet was the main fleet of the British Royal Navy during the First World War. Based on Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and later at Rosyth on the Firth of Forth it only took part in one fleet action during the war -- the Battle of Jutland. Formed in August 1914 (from the First Fleet and elements of the Second Fleet of the Home Fleets), it included many state-of-the-art capital ships. It was initially commanded by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, who was succeeded by Admiral Sir David Beatty in 1916. There are copies of the same item in Dutch, French and Portuguese.
