Programme of six-county conference : in furtherance of demand for immediate amendment of the Education Act.

Bibliographic Details
Summary:Programme [black lettering printed on light orange paper] relating to a six-county conference in furtherance of demand for immediate amendment of the Education Act, held under the auspices of a United Education Committee of the Protestant Churches and the County Grand Lodge of Belfast. The Londonderry Education Act of 1923 was seen by the Protestant churches and their clergy as a secularizing act as they objected to various clauses regarding religious instruction and the non-denominational appointment of teachers. The Protestant churches immediately joined forces, waging a campaign against the act which culminated in this conference which took place in the Assembly Hall, Belfast on Thursday, 5 March 1925, under the Chairmanship of Rev. R. W. Hamilton, Moderator of the General Assembly. This leaflet prints the four detailed resolutions proposed by Sir Joseph Davison, Grand Master of County Grand L.O.L., Belfast; by the Dean of Derry; by Councillor George Stewart and by Rev. W. H. Smyth respectively. Printed at foot of front page: "Opening Hymn - 'O God our help in ages past'. Prayer - The Dean of Belfast. Apologies - Rev. James Quinn, B.A, Hon Sec. Brief Statement by Chairman". Includes brief manuscript annotations on verso of backpage: " ... Ulster honours the Bible. Ulster will not be the first part of the Empire from which the Bible will be banished. The unyielding spirit of Ulster ...".
