Notes: | On recto [in green font with an Irish harp surrmounted by a winged figure of Victory] :"Everywhere and always faithful". 16th(Irish)Division. France. Christmas, 1916". On recto [in black font]: "Wishing you a Happy Christmas. From Lt. Brian Kennedy [the name handwritten into the card in blue ink]. And my heart goes back to Erin's Isle / and the friends [this last word handwritten into the card blue ink] I left behind me". Opposite is a black and white illustration by J.H. Fletcher with the title "Xmas Dinner 1916", featuring two soldiers, one smoking a pipe, carrying a hamper. The printer was "Frank Smythson Ltd.", now known as Smythson, the British manufacturer of luxury stationery, leather goods and diaries based in Bond St. The 16th (Irish) Division was a voluntary 'Service' division of Kitchener's New Army raised in Ireland from the National Volunteers in September 1914. In December 1915, the division moved to France, joining the British Expeditionary Force under the command of Irish Major General William Hickie and spent the duration of the First World War in action on the Western Front.
