Summary: | Extracts of proceedings during the Mansion House Conference April 18-19 and 8 May 1918. It includes the decision to send a delegation of John Dillon, Éamon De Valera, Timothy Healy, William O'Brien and Laurence O'Neill, the Lord Mayor of Dublin to Maynooth to meet and brief the Irish hierarchy [bishops] to co-ordinate and lobby aginst the introduction of conscription for Ireland. It also includes the decision that the parish priest will act as treasurers to the National Defence Fund. The bishops call for "The Pledge" against compulsory conscription to be announced a the following Sunday's mass. Irish nationalists condemn the arrest of Éamon De Valera and Arthur Griffith. This handbill also reprints the text of correspondence between Laurence O'Neill and Arthur James Balfour [then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whitehall] in relation to a document being submitted to Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of America. |
