"After the volume was printed, and some copies of it had been circulated, an opportunity occurred of sending it to Beethoven, who corrected the few inaccuracies that had escaped the notice of the editor ..."--Pref. to v. 1.

Preface to vol. 1 dated "Anno 1814"; some copies are known to exist with a shorter preface dated "March 1814", presumably the uncorrected state as sent to Beethoven, regarded by Hopkinson and Oldman as a 'proof' stage.

Vol. 1 was entered at Stationers' Hall on 10 March 1815 which may more accurately reflect the publication date of the revised issue.

Colophons have the imprint of J. Moir, and are dated 1814 and 1816 respectively.

Vol. 1 has frontispiece ''St. Cecilia" (1814); v. 2, ''The origin of painting" (1816).

Vol. 1 contains 1 song by Haydn.
