Summary:Heaney's letter relates to his composition of a 'bridge poem'. Included are drafts of the poem (first line beginning 'Steady under strain and strong through tension' ), Diacon's translation of the poem into French, Pietrass' translation into German and an attached letter to Heaney from Elisabeth Rohmer, of the Conseil de l'Europe, concerning the inclusion of the poem in the book 'Pont de l'Europe'. Letters are dated 7-15 March 1999. This poem was subsequently published as '3. The Bridge' in 'Ten Glosses' in the collection 'Electric Light' (2001).
