| Notes: | There are three interlinked strands in the documents. There are official messages from the Executive of Clan-na-Gael and the I.R.A. Army Council that are formal in tone. Generally less formal are messages exchanged between the I.R.A. in Ireland, its representatives and 'An Timthire' in the US; these more informative letters were sent 3-4 times a week. Thirdly, there are occasional personal messages between Dublin and New York, usually to explain or stress a subject which was causing problems or misunderstandings. There are also some letters from or concerning people moving to the US or returning to Ireland who might be of use in the movement in either country. Many messages contain passages in a cipher or code, probably when dealing with military matters (e.g. arms purchases) or when discussing individuals. Some of these cipher passages have helpful annotations in the margins (e.g. Despatch No. 77 from 'An Timthire' in New York, dated 4 Dec. 1929); there is at least one message with an accompanying slip on which two coded segments have apparently been entirely decoded (from 'An Timthire', Despatch No. 13, 12 June 1931). Most are dated and numbered. There are references to missing despatches but the missing material is generally repeated and referenced. Some of the items are undated, or have incomplete dates. 'An Timthire' was the title of the full-time I.R.A. representative in America. His main function was to keep in touch with Clan-na-Gael and to ensure smooth relations as far as was possible. 'An Timthire' was also the main channel for transmission of funds to Ireland and these are meticulously receipted as received, thus allowing for a reasonably accurate estimate of the I.R.A.'s receipts from the US.
