| Notes: | The collection includes: a photograph from Octavo Studios, Sth. King St., Dublin [probably of Gerard Crofts]; three official letters from 1922 and 1924, to Mrs. Margaret Crofts about her employment in the civil service, plus an official envelope dated 1925; a letter to Gerard Crofts, dated 10th January 1929, about his claim for an army pension; an application form for a military service certificate and two associated envelopes (1934); invitation to G. Crofts, signed by Eva Gay, to the unveiling of a memorial cross to Peadar de Faoite; invitation to an Old IRA reunion event, 1934; invitation to G. Crofts from The "Caledonia" Concert Bureau, Glasgow, dated 11th Jan. 1930, asking him to sing at an event in March (various notes and a poem are written on the back of this item); manuscript poem entitled 'Tullynahaw' (2 sheets); a note written on the back of half a bridge score sheet; various postcards, photographs, a memorial card and press cuttings of family interest. Gerard Crofts was a poet and a singer. He had a fine tenor voice, and was a favourite performer in patriotic concerts; he also sang on radio and made records. His brother Joseph was a composer, pianist and arranger; their friends included Peadar Kearney (writer of 'A Soldier's Song'), the composer Cathal Mac Dubhghaill and the publishers Martin Walton and Joe Stanley. Crofts' family had a shop in Capel St. His father, Michael, was reputedly a Fenian in 1867, who subsequently enrolled in the Papal Zouave infantry force in defence of the Papal States and fought at the siege of Ancona. Gerard joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914 and was imprisoned after fighting in the GPO during the 1916 Rising. His personal friends included Sean Mac Diarmada and Eamonn Ceannt among the executed leaders, and also Countess Markiewicz. Physical description: 1 folder (38 items). more |
