Description: Contains manuscript drafts of poems and prose pieces. Included are drafts of the introduction and chapter 1 (incomplete) of 'The Gentle Flame' ('a workbook for students of poetry'), a draft of the essay 'Yeats As An Example' and drafts of the poems 'Sloe Gin', 'The Easter House' (published in 'Pequod' 1984),'Sloe Gin', 'Malibu' and the sequence 'Station Island'. With attached loose worksheets containing related manuscript and typescript drafts.

Also included are a number of diary entries in which he refers to his starting work on a poem 'set on Lough Derg' (4 Sept 1979), his feelings on leaving Belfast, his thoughts that the 'Lough Derg poem' is 'like a building site, abandoned in November. Cold. Mucky.' and the importance of recent contact with Ted Hughes and Thomas Kilroy (16 Nov 1980), his impressions on the politcal and intellectual climate in Ireland (Jan 1981), further progress and plans for the 'Station Island' sequence (16 Jan. 1981) and his thoughts on his time spent teaching alongside Michael McLaverty in St. Thomas' School, Belfast.
