Notes:It is clear that this list was compiled a number of years after the Act of Union was passed, as 74 of the 140 names listed here have the word 'dead' written after their name. This list was bound in-house in the NLI in the early 20th century [it has a blue stamp mark opposite the first page with 'National Library of Ireland / Bound 23 Aug. 1906']. The pages of the list were originally held together by a pin as the pin-marks are still present on the extreme top left-hand corner of each page. It is bound in black boards with a spine title 'The Irish Black List'. The list consists of 19 pages with 140 names, each numbered 1. - 140. Each name is listed alphabetically [in some cases including the person's full first name, in others just the initials of the first name are present - determined it appears by the amount of space Barrington thought would be taken up by the length of the surname of the person]. Each name is written on the left-hand side of each page after the number, followed either by a left brace/curly bracket or a comma after the name and a few dots of ink across to comments; in almost all cases there is a reference to the new title, new job and/or new job title, new lands acquired and/or specific monetary payment received and in a number of cases, comments on the character of particular individuals by Barrington with references to his 'Red List' [this was published along with 'The Black List' in 1833 in Dublin by James Duffy & Co. in 'The Rise and Fall of the Irish Nation' with the subtitle 'A Full Account of the Bribery & Corruption by which the Union was carried; The Family Histories of the Members who Voted Away the Irish Parliament; With an Extraordinary Black List of the Title, Places, and Pensions which they Received for their Corrupt Votes'].

Originally listed in NLI Sources as 'A copy of the Irish Black List, being a list of people rewarded for voting for the Act of Union, by Sir Jonah Barrington'.
