Notes: | Pim refers to the duty on flour and wheat in this letter. "Indian corn" [maize] was during this period known as "Peel's Brimstone" after the Prime Minister Robert Peel who refused to ban Irish corn exports, [which continued often under armed guard] and instead provided for large scale imports of American maize which retailed at a penny a pound as part of an extensive food and relief works programme.
