| Notes: | Includes a manuscript copy of the affadavit of Doctor James Verling, appointed surgeon to Napoleon in 1818-1820, "Shown in court on June 9th, 1823", which begins "In the King's Bench, James Verling of Woolwich in the County of Kent, Doctor of Medicine and Assistant Surgeon in the Royal Artillery maketh oath and saith that he was stationed at the Island of St. Helena from the month of Oct. 1815 to the commencement of the year 1820 and was under Lieut. General Sir Hudson Lowe, the then Govr. of the said island having the care of the person of Napoleon Bonaparte..." James Roche Verling was born in Cobh, Co. Cork, graduated in medicine from Edinburgh University and became a Second Assistant Surgeon in the Ordnance Medical Division. He joined the HMS Northumberland, (which brought Napoleon to St Helena) as a surgeon and was chosen to replace fellow Irishman Dr. Barry O'Meara as Napoleons' doctor.
