Gilbert's writings were all published posthumously and are marked by precision and lucidity of style, and very considerable mastery of his subject, and evince a real desire to exhibit it in a logical shape. His most notable judicial act in Ireland, and the turning point of his career, was in the case of Annesley v. Sherlock in 1716-20. The case turned on the issue of whether appeals from equity jurisdictions in Ireland lay to the Irish, or the British, House of Lords, a matter of some sensitivity.
