Thomas Gurney was a stenographer who settled in London from Luton, where he had worked as a Schoolmaster, and then became employed as a horologist and shorthand teacher. His skill at shorthand earned him work in the Old Bailey. His career coincided with the advancement of shorthand, and Gurney published some books on the subject. On a separate note, Poems on various occasions, written by Gurney, is critical of certain preachers who lazily repeat over and over sermons twenty or thirty years old.
