Summary: | Emmet Square, formerly Cumberland Square, is the heart of modern Birr.The square was first laid out in the Early Georgian period and had a pond around the pillar. The Square got its name Cumberland Sq. from a 49 foot pillar erected in 1747 in memory of the Duke of Cumberland, who defeated the Scottish at the battle of Culloden in 1746. The square has many fine Georgian features. |
