| Summary: | The foundation of Tully Chuch dates from approximately the Sixth Century and was an early church of St Brigid, referred to a Tully of the Bishops. The chancel was probably added in the twelfth century. The ruins consist mainly of the chancel, with only a low portion of the wall of the nave remaining. The church remains in a rural setting, but housing developments are planned for the near future. Burials are made in the churchyard, and early ornamented gravestones of the type known as Rathdown Slabs were found in the graveyard. A Celtic cross stands on the roadway nearby, while a tall narrow cross (13th century)can be seen in the field opposite. |
