Summary:This picturesque little bridge allows passage over a marshy spot in the causeway which was built as a Educational Reserve by the students of Birr Community School. This sylvan area has the beautiful Slieve Bloom Mountains as a backdrop. Close by is what is believed to have been the first Convent in Ireland erected by St Ciaran of Saighir for his mother St. Liadhain. We are reminded of its existance in a poem by a local poet Lawrence H. Dunne, the first and fourth stanza of which reads: At a turn in the road half a mile from Killyon, To the north of Clareen and the west of Glendyne, Eirn's first convent is still to be seen, Where the bones of St. Liadhain keep the grass green. The ivyed old gable still stands in the green, And vespers are sung in the hawthorn tree, Each blosson a maid in the heavenly choir, Songs to the music of Oisins sweet lyre.
