Summary:This little area was once the principal eastern exit from the fortified town of Athlone. Located beside the Old Dublin Gate, it may once have been a fortified compound for keeping the cattle of the town safe from marauding invaders. To-day the claim to fame of the Bawn lies not in its role in the defence of the town, but as the birthplace of John Count McCormack on 14th June 1884.
