Summary:The bridge of Athlone, This is the bridge that was build by the Shannon Commissioners in the 1840's. It was completed in1844. The opening on the left of the picture is the nacigation channel. Originally it had a swivel span to permit boats with high superstructures to pass but this was replaced by the fixed span in the early 1960's .
