Schull Funeral Procession, Co. Cork
|Main Creator:||Snodgrass, Lee, photographer|
It is not unusual in rural Ireland for the coffin to be carried on the shoulders of relatives and friends from the church to graveyard, a half-mile in this case.Business comes to a halt during the passage through Main Street and every family in the area is represented in the funeral procession.Funerals are also social occasions and, in addition to showing solidarity with the bereaved relatives, they offer the opportunity for social intercourse with seldom seen friends. Like other rural customs that have been lost, this will probably vanish in the next few decades.
