Summary: | A John Deere tractor bailer bais oat straw at Marlton Road, Wicklow. The 8 1/2 acre field has been sewn with the "Barra" variety of Winter Oats on 13 October 1992 by Martin Carr, Ashtown. The crop was combined by contractor Norman Douglas on 16th August 1993 at a cost of £24 per acre. On August 24th the day the photograph was taken Dermot Sheane was baling the straw in round bales 5 ft in diameter and 4 ft wide at the cost of £1.50 per bale. The field yielded 64 round bales in total. The crop of oats was intended for use as horse feed while the straw would be used as bedding for cattle. |
