Summary:West Wicklow has the ruins of several Army Barracks, built during the years of British Occupation. Th eGlen of Imaal has it's own national Army camp at Coolmoney , with accommodation for 350 troops operating all year round and a shooting range for training purposes. At local level, the camp provides employment in civilian jobs, at least 50 people are employed full time. This is a great help in an area that suffers from high unemployment. Some find the armu presence restrictive and even object to Army notices, however, the local people accept the presence of the Army in their midst with good grace. There are special arrangements made for mountain climbers so that safety is assured. The Glen of Imaal is a haven for the walker / climber.
