The West Offaly Railway at Blackwater Bog

| Summary: | 12,000 years ago this area of cutaway bog at Blackwater lay beneathe a glacier. In 7,000BC in nearby Boora Bog early inhabitants of Ireland were constructing their cooking hearths for the cooking of their catches of fish, wildfowl, animals ec. Twenty four of these heaths have recently been found in an archaeoloical dig and in a few hundres years from now this area will be field and woodland. Today however you can take a 5.5 mile guided tour across the Blackwater bog in this luxury West Offaly bog train. The train is a 50-seater, totally enclosed carriages, purpose-built in 1990. It has an elaborate public-address system, air-conditioning and toilet facilities. On the journey you will learn about the nearby Esker Riada , the ancient Pilgrims Path to Clonmacnoise, the Norman Tower House, the flora and fauna of the bog and lots more. |
