In the early 1960's, the Deansgrange Area was served by a part-time library at Cabinteely. Only one third of the building was used as a library, the other two parts being used for a health clinic. The Cabinteely library was renovated and re-stocked in the late 1960's, being enlarged to use the complete building and opening full time.Nevertheless the County and City Librarian, Ms.Mairin O'Byrne, began to plan for a larger library in the Deansgrange area. The County Planners wanted to locate the new library in an area of proposed public buildings- library, school, health clinic etc.- where the Health Clinic alone now stands in Meadowvale. Ms. O'Byrne wanted a more prominent site. Around 1970 a planning permission was sought for Nos. 1,3, and 5 Clonkeen Drive to supercede the previous permision for houses. This writer suggested to Ms. O'Byrne that she should seek this site for the library and having inspected the site, she adopted the suggestion.. I also put the idea to the Clonkeen Residents Association who were alarmed by the prospect of a licienced hotel on the Drive and the Association also pursued the proposal. The Dublin County Council made a Compulsory Purchase Order for the site only to discouver that they had no powers for such a proposal. They then opened negotiations with the owners to purchase by agreement. The negotiations drifted on for years. They recieved a boost when the owners started to lay foundations for houses on the site, and an increased offer was made which clinched the deal. The building was designed by the staff of the Dublin County Council and built by T. Cummins and Co Ltd. It was opened by Mr. Sean Barrett, Chairman, Dublin County Council, on Friday 2nd July 1982. Deansgrange Library rapidly became the most used library in the Dublin Co. Council Area.
