Summary: | This charming old hall on the huge chestnut tree lined mall and approach to Birr Castle was built for the Church of Ireland Body by William Sweeney. It was opened on the 15th January 1889. It was sold to a local man in the 1930s and was used as a dance hall and as a theatre as can be seen from the name over the door, 'The Good Old Days' - the last play on show there. It was the only hall in Birr up to the 1950s, when the new Marian Hall was opened. It afterwards fell into disuse and almost dereliction. Happily, however, it has now been acquired by the Heritage Foundation and plans are afoot to transform and restore it to its former glory. |
