Wicklow dates back to pre Celtic times. The Cauci a Celtic tribe from the German Belgian border replaced the earlier settlers about two and a half thousand years ago and the growing settlement traded with coastal Britain. Named Inbheardee, Mouth of the River Dee its name changed in christian times to Cill Mhantáin (The church of Mantan, one of St Patricks monks )and finally under Viking influence to Vikinglo, Vicklo, Wicklow.
