Summary: | Since 1946 Bord na Mona has developed more than 200,000 acres of bogland, harnessing modern technology to produce a range of fuel and horticultural products that have created wealth out of what had been wasteland. Here at historic Derrinlough (Doire na Loca , oak wood of the lake)the work of peat harvesting goes on all day. There is very little oak wood here now and very little lake. The lake, Lough Coura, or Inchloughcoura, has disappeared with modern drainage, and access to the island, with its ruined Le Port Castle, can be gained without the aid of a boat. It was on this island that the Great Rebellion of 1641-52 ended with the surrendering of the island by Col. Grace with the terms, 'Horses and arms to be handed in at Birr on the 26th of August, soldiers and clergy free to transport themselves beyond the seas'. |
