Summary: | About four miles south of Newtownards on the shores of Strangford Lough is a popular bathing and picnic area known as Barr's Bay. Named after an obscure local resident the bay has been popular with town's people for many generations. In recent times it has been improved by Ards Borough Council who have provided parking, toilets and picnic tables. Prior to the First World War shipping was an important feature of life on Strangford Lough. Ships of differing sizes sailed to and from the many small harbours and sheltered bays around the Lough. Today sailing for pleasure predominates. |
