From the earliest recordd accounts of Strabane the low valley of the Mourne at the confluence with Finn and Foyle, made worse by the tidal backwah from Lough Foyle has been liabe to serious flooding. The early 19th century saw loss of life and disease caused by rains, bad weather and flood. Again in 1909, 1929, 1948 there was serious loss of property, but no drowning. In 1988 the serious consequences of flood water breaching the old flood wall at Waterside and Lower Main Street caused untold damage and hardship. The flood wall was completed in 1991. |
