A collection of miscellaneous material relating to the sinking of the Titanic
spanning dates from 1908 to 1912
Summary: | This collection includes a poem written in the memory of those who died during the sinking of the Titanic entitled "In memoriam:the loss of the Titanic [:] a few lines written in memory of 1,500 brave souls who gave their lives for the women and children on board the ill-fated ship". It also includes a 4 pp. [1 folded sheet] from a visitors' signing in book from Prospect Park in Co. Kilkenny [from 1908 to 1911] signed on December 7, 1911 by Hilda Slater from Halifax, Nova Scotia; alongside her name is an asterisk and at the top of the page is another asterisk drawing the readers' attention to the fact that "This was the last lady placed in a ship's boat in the Titanic disaster 1912". There are two newspapers included also - one from "The Daily Graphic" dated Saturday April 20, 1912 which is an illustrated supplement entitled "Titanic - In memoriam number" and a copy of the last edition of the "Edmonton Journal" published in Edmondon, Alberta, Canada on April 16, 1912. It bears the front page headline "S.O.S." ---Save our souls wail thousands, as giant Titanic plunges beneath waves" with an illustration of the ship and a reproduction of a sketch of "the commanding officer of hapless vessel" Captain E.J. Smith. |
