If you feel a sense of 'déja vu' or even if you feel you have seen this all before then you are correct. It is Wexford but taken from the other bank of the Slaney and showing the town and its skyline in the distance. The two in the foreground add some interest and are posing very nicely to enable Mr. French to 'frame' the scene.

O Mac
Ah! The infamous case of the photographers box. Could that man be Mr. French himself?

It's incredibly immediate. It feels just like it was taken today, but for the costumes. Btw, if that's a Peterson pipe then I think this must be 1890s or more, although I'm no expert.

Thanks all. I''ve updated the map and tags for this shot. Does anyone have any thoughts on date? As Wexford seems to be pretty well covered in the NIAH database, I'd hoped we might spot some buildings to help us refine the 50-year date range. I guess the most obvious skyline elements (the churches) preceed the earliest date in the catalogue (1860s), and so perhaps aren't 'useful' in that sense. Anyone spot anything else? Or do we think it's a similar range to the Quay/Crescent image we had recently?

After 1882 due to the Provincial Bank (see note) - www.dia.ie/works/view/4862/CO.+WEXFORD,+WEXFORD,+ANNE+STR...(&+CUSTOM+HOUSE+QUAY),+PROVINCIAL+BANK As posted by www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley/ on the other photo. I think the railway and 'Woodenworks' opened in 1882 (possibly 1874). French/Lawrence was there earlier, when the Woodenworks was being built - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000337811 catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000337809 catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000337807

Always good to revisit these photos. I think this might well be Mr French and son(?) having a grand day out. Another photo shows the leather case for glass plates better - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000322477
