Summary:Second volume of Cook's journal of the second voyage, 9 April 1772 to 19 July 1775(See MS J 7 for Volume I). The manuscript is in the hand of Cook's clerk on the Resolution during the third voyage. Title inscribed in ink in Volume I.


Volume II dates from 15 May 1774 to 19 July 1775 and contains 5 engraved maps: 'Chart of Discoveries made in the South Pacific Ocean in His Majesty's Ship Resolution Under the Command of Captain Cook. 1774'; 'Port Sandwich in Mallicollo; Harbour of Balde in New Caledonia'; Port Resolution, in the Isle of Tanna'; 'Christmas Sound on the SW Coast of Terra Del Fuego'; 'A Chart of the Southern Extremity of America 1775'; and 'Chart of the Discoveries made in the South Atlantic Ocean, in His Majestys [sic] Ship Resolution, under the Command of Captain Cook, in Jany. 1775'.

Notes:Captain Cook undertook 3 voyages to the Pacific, during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. On his second major voyage between 1772 and 1775 he circumnavigated the world in HMS Resolution accompanied by HMS Adventure commanded by Tobias Furneaux. Both ships set sail for the Antartic in July 1772. In the course of the voyage Cook visited the Antartic Circle, Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti, the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, Palmerston Island, South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia.

Exhibited in 2012 as part of 'Particles of the Past' in the Discovery exhibition in the National Library of Ireland, in association with Dublin European City of Science.
