| Summary: | First volume of Cook's journal of the second voyage, 9 April 1772 to 19 July 1775 (See MS J 8 for Volume 2). The manuscript is in the hand of Cook's clerk on the Resolution during the third voyage. Title inscribed in ink on title page. Volume I dates from 9 April 1772 to 14 May 1774 and contains 7 engraved maps: 'A Chart of the Southern Hemisphere shewing the Tracks of some of the most distinguished Navigators By Captain James Cook of His Majesty's Navy'; 'Port Praya in the Island St. Jago, one of the Cape De Verds'; 'Sketch of Dusky Bay in New Zeeland; 1773', 'Harvey's Isle; Palmerston Isle; Turtle Isle; Savage Isle'; 'Chart of the Friendly Isles'; 'Easter Island'; and 'Sketch of the Marquesas De Mendoca'. | Notes: | Captain Cook undertook 3 voyages to the Pacific, during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. On his second major voyage between 1772 and 1775 he circumnavigated the world in HMS Resolution accompanied by HMS Adventure commanded by Tobias Furneaux. Both ships set sail for the Antartic in July 1772. In the course of the voyage Cook visited the Antartic Circle, Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti, the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, Palmerston Island, South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia. Exhibited in 2012 as part of 'Particles of the Past' in the Discovery exhibition in the National Library of Ireland, in association with Dublin European City of Science. Physical description: 1 vol.
