Joshua Harrison Hargrave was born in Cork ca. 1860, and worked as a railway engineer for the Great Northern Railway, in its Dublin office. A keen sportman, he was honorary secretary of the Dublin Bay Sailing Club and Dun Laoghaire branch of the Lifeboat Institution. He was also an enthusiastic amateur photographer; in 1891 the Photographic Society of Ireland awarded him a medal for his lantern slides.

Feeling particularly fiendish today! This image is from a lantern slide in our Joshua H. Hargrave collection.
If you like, you can take it as an interesting image in and of itself, but if you're up for a challenge, Hargrave noted that this was taken in Co. Wicklow "between N[ew]t[own]M[oun]tkennedy and Roundwood".
Is it possible that telegraph pole, grass verge and stone wall are all still there? Is it possible that you can find them if they are?
P.S. We should all remember how these women are dressed since we have a date for this one - just might help us with some of the Lawrence photos! i.e. you should all remember and remind me next time argument is raging about a type of sleeve or length of skirt...
Date: August 1895

Have you any idea how many walls there are "between N[ew]t[own]M[oun]tkennedy and Roundwood"?

I'll hazard a guess that it is on a the road that branches to the right of the R765 just out of N[ew]t[own]M[oun]tkennedy. Are they looking to see if they are on the right road?

This is a possible location maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=roundwood&hl=en&ll=53.06... The woman standing in the culvert suggests a flood drain into a river and the wall is a bridge across Vartry Reservoir which was completed in 1863 - I think the scene has changed but having combed the R765 from Newtownmountkennedy towards Ringwood this is the firstly likely place it could be. It's right on the edge of Roundwood and along the R765 the poles appear and disappear. If this isn't it, I would say the scene has long gone but this fits as the brickwork is simiar albeit re-topped and pole is around right place. The wall end suggests a gateway or opening. Thoughts anyone? Oh, one final point, you can see using Google Street View that the route the R765 follows has been changed over the years slightly so it this isn't correct it may be on a piece of now abandoned road.

The bike in the centre has a set of skirt guard strings, like the ones in this page... www.oldbike.eu/emancipation/?page_id=1597.

The bike on the right must belong to the photographer chap. It seems to have a camera box hanging from the crossbar. Possibly even spare corset whalebones.

@66151649@N02 If you like that, you'd love New Two Pot House. (in Irish "Tigh Nua an Dá Phota") Or what about Muckanaghederdauhaulia (in Irish "Muiceanach idir Dhá Sháile").

Newtown MK was a popular stop off in the 19th century. According to the standard Wicklow tourist guide of the time (GN Wright's Guide to the County of Wicklow):
About three miles from Delgany and 17 m 2f from Dublin stands the village of Newtown Mount Kennedy. Although not a picturesque or romantic object itself, it is surrounded by the most delightful and enchanting scenery and would be an excellent place for the tourist to take up head quarters for a short time. There are a number of gentlemen's seats around and the sea is but a short distance. From this place as a centre he could strike off upon very pleasant short excursions each day and return to dinner.

@blackpoolbeach That's a great article on the Sunbeam, i remember Sunbeams about when I was a kid, long after 1909 to be sure but still around though probably by a different maker as a lot of them had consolidated after the war.

@swordscookie Sunbeam started with bicycles, then went into cars, aircraft, buses and trolleybuses. I remember the Sunbeam trolleybuses in the 1960s, very smooth and quiet. www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/Museum/Transport/Buses/Su...

Really, gentlemen, I refuse to be harangued in the manner, but as @38401430@N06 used the magic word "please", then another wholly unseasonal virtual plum pudding it is...
