Gerald William Balfour (1853-1945) was Chief Secretary for Ireland 1895-1900. He took office during a relatively quiet period: agrarian agitation had died down, nationalists were bitterly divided, and the prospect of Home Rule had receded. He was the younger brother of A.J. Balfour.
